Phuang Malai (Jasmine Garland)

I could never put words when I received this garland from a favourite student of mine at the end of the school year last June. I was told that the intricacies of the design and craftmanship that took for this beautiful piece tells them that this is an exquisitely expensive gift.

As a teacher of many years, this is the first time I got something more than wrapped boxes or thank you cards.  Getting one meant a lot since the garland signified a respectful honour to me as a teacher. It was truly a blessing.

Last month was my teaching anniversary. My journey as a teacher is now faced with fatigue.  It might be life itself and not the vocation I chose but I am already feeling the toil of having to start anew every brand new school year while nurturing and guiding the children 'jump' out of their shells.

I always ask the purpose of my existence, and then what being a teacher gives me. It dawned on me through hearsays during the summer and before the start of the school year that I am truly loved by many.  I am blessed to have been given trust by hundreds of families while instilling in me their sincerest gratitude whenever I meet them.

Maybe my walk will be adourned by garlands in the coming years and I would be grateful.  Maybe the love could bring me strength to continue as a dedicated educator.  Maybe the respect I earn from giving a child see his or her potentials can propel me further.

As the beautiful jasmine garland takes four elements in its creation: proportion, skill, colour and freshness; may my life as an educator be guided by four elements as well: balance, knowledge, patience and a fresh attitude.

Undeniably, working with kids is tiring, but the same energy that consumes your strength, is the same thing that brightens up your every day ;) a simple hug and "good morning" from kids, are simple acts of kindness combined with innocence that makes working with kids worth it all.

Happy Teaching Anniversary Cher Jo!

Please remember that you are not just a teacher in the classroom, you and your blog has become my teacher too, without each of us knowing it in the process. But you certainly are one of the prized mentors in my lifetime :)

I am forever grateful to you.

Baka sa age na rin yan. I also feel burn out now that I entered the 30s. The passion for my work is still there but I feel exhausted.

Ang ganda ng garland. I do hope na ma-preserve yan at hindi masira.

This Jasmine Garland is beautiful and touching to my thoughts. It brings me so much fragrant memories of my growing up years in Thailand.

Hi Yccos,

Thank you for the lovely comments. Yes, tiring but rewarding as well, not monetary but something really I could bring wherever I could be, and grow old remembering all the fond memories with students and parents.

Prized mentor, what big honour, thank you so much.

You know I learn a lot from you too and having you around is a blessing.

Hello Ish,

I wish I could preserve it so I took a photo and shared instead.

Burn out, I did feel that after six years of teaching then it came back. Maybe, or for sure, I do not learn much anymore from my workplace thus the burn out. However, I still challenge myself with all those workshops I am to attend to and online courses I need to finish.

How sweet must be your childhood Mr. TM, and to bring back fond memories would be great. I wish you a happy life and thank you for the visits.
