the dying tree

Years ago, there was a project done by the children in my class where they explored a tree at the back of the school and named it the dying tree.  It was placed in the garden and did not grow well because the ball of roots was encased in a plastic net and was not removed when it was planted, talk about being stupid.

Half of the tree did not survive the tragedy as it wasn't growing, but the other half was still growing some leaves.  The children took the opportunity to discuss among themselves what they should do to help the tree.  And a lot of little and big ideas came, but in the end, the tree was given a proper 'gift' as a symbol of its resilience and hope to live.

I learned a lot exploring the emotions and sentiments of the tree and those who committed to making the tree worth saving. I learned how to go on with life. I discovered a passion for plants and trees. I envision a better life when we save the trees around us. Talk about sustainability and zero waste, all because of one dying tree.

The tree is still alive, much bigger than a few years ago. While it grew tougher, the stories around it evolved into the cycle of life. The two most admirable people behind the project passed away a few years later. I still remember the dad, who offered to plant flowers around the tree, and my colleague, who inspired me to work on this project as part of this experience and journey. May their souls rest in peace.

I was told the tree would have to go a year ago, but I fought against the idea. In June of last year, we offered flowers, lit some candles, and offered prayers and a eulogy for the two persons who gave life to the dying tree. Let us be the example of hope and be quiet listeners to someone experiencing difficulties in life. We can always extend support toward a life worth saving.
