cherished connections

I once had a former coordinator who became a dear mentor to me. Our bond formed through collaborative projects at school, where we shared thoughts and ideas, fostering a space of creativity and critical thinking—all while maintaining mutual respect and care for one another. When I lost her a few years ago during the Covid pandemic, I was devastated. I couldn't be in Italy for her burial, and when the news spread throughout our schools, few realized the depth of our connection. It wasn’t until a fellow teacher shared our close bond with the administrators that others understood how much she meant to me.

Then there’s another coordinator, whose mastery of her craft is nothing short of impressive. She is a walking encyclopedia of teaching and learning. Much like my first mentor, she carries a strict demeanor, but our relationship deepened through online meetings focused on teaching preparations and lesson planning. During her two visits to our school, she spent most of her time in my classroom, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome I offered. I vividly remember her presence during one of my best presentations. When she announced to me that she will be leaving school for good, I couldn’t hold back my tears, knowing she would be deeply missed. Although she has returned to Egypt, we continue to keep in touch.

Lastly, there’s a friend from church with whom I share a different kind of connection. We may not have any photos together, but our bond is built on countless shared moments during church-related activities. After he left the country for further studies, we lost touch. However, during one of the darkest periods of my life, he reached out to see me. Though busy with trips abroad due to work, he came for a night to pray for me. This solidified my friendship with him of which I am deeply grateful. Our conversations may be brief now, often just short messages through Messenger, but we both understand that our friendship—and brotherhood—will endure. He is back in the Philippines, serving his country, and I cherish the connection we maintain.
